Description
This year, the Köthen Bach Festival Days are placing not only Bach but also another important figure in Central German musical life at the centre of their programme: Friedrich Wilhelm Rust. This composer is inextricably linked with the city of Dessau, where he served as court music director during the second half of the 18th century and played a decisive role in shaping the city’s musical life. Born in Wörlitz, Rust’s considerable musical talent was recognised at an early age and strongly supported by the local ruler, Prince Leopold Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau. During his studies of law in Halle, Rust received instruction from Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, who was working as an organist in the city.

Some years later, the Prince of Dessau financed Rust’s stay in Berlin and Potsdam, where he received instruction from the violinist Franz Benda and the royal harpsichordist Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. This was followed by a journey to Italy in 1765/66, during which Rust met Giuseppe Tartini and Giovanni Battista Martini. Having received such a comprehensive education, Rust took charge of all musical activities in Dessau from 1769 onwards. He introduced regular concerts, founded the “Gesellschaftliches Theater” and was appointed court music director. In addition to cantatas, stage works and instrumental music, Rust composed numerous piano sonatas in which his virtuoso passages revealed a highly distinctive musical style. His chamber music and songs are equally impressive in quality.
In this “Rustiade”, Rust’s works are complemented by compositions by his two teachers—the brothers Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach—as well as by Johann Friedrich Reichardt. The programme also includes poems by Sophie Friederike Mereau and Luise Hensel.

are admitted free of charge. Holders of a disability pass marked with a “B” are
entitled to a concessionary ticket; their accompanying person is admitted free
