Description
“Schubertiades” are nothing unusual – but what is a “Rustiade”? Essentially, it is just as delightful: piano works, songs and chamber music by the Dessau music director Friedrich Wilhelm Rust, as well as works by his immediate teachers and contemporaries, are performed in a relaxed sequence, complemented by poetic texts.

Rust, whose almost completely forgotten oeuvre is a focus of this year’s Bach Festival Days, was of great importance to the Köthen/Dessau region in the second half of the eighteenth century. From 1755 to 1758, the Wörlitz-born musician attended the grammar school in Köthen before going on to study at the University of Halle. There he met Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, who was working as an organist in the city. A few years later, the Prince of Anhalt-Dessau financed a stay in Berlin and Potsdam, where Rust received instruction from the violinist Franz Benda and the royal harpsichordist Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Finally, in 1765/66, he undertook a journey to Italy, during which he met Giuseppe Tartini and Giovanni Battista Martini. Thus comprehensively educated, Rust took charge of all musical activities in Dessau from 1769 onwards. He introduced regular concerts, founded the “Gesellschaftliches Theater” and was appointed court music director. Alongside cantatas, stage works and instrumental music, Rust composed numerous piano sonatas, in which virtuosic passages reveal a highly distinctive musical voice. His chamber music and songs, too, are of impressive quality.

are admitted free of charge. Holders of a disability pass marked with a “B” are
entitled to a concessionary ticket; their accompanying person is admitted free
