Description
Can Bach and Handel really be compared? Of course not. Both were extraordinary composers who happened to be born in the same year, but who then pursued and found very different paths in their musical lives. Handel became the worldly cosmopolitan who caused a sensation with his operas and oratorios in Italy and, above all, in London, ran opera companies himself and was almost worshipped as a cult figure. Bach, who rarely ventured beyond central Germany, focused primarily on church music and retained a strong affinity for conservative counterpoint.
The two never met, although they were certainly aware of each other.
In this concert by the Wernigerode Radio Youth Choir and the Halle Handel Festival Orchestra, however, the two composers are compared – specifically in terms of the impact of their choral music.
