Biography
Described as “a larger-than-life personality who puts a decisive interpretive stamp on everything he plays” (South Florida Classical Review), Dmitry Ablogin is recognized as one of today’s leading pianists, equally at home on period and modern instruments.
Dmitry has appeared at major concert halls, among them the Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Konzerthaus, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Cologne Philharmonie, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Warsaw Philharmonie, Konzerthaus Freiburg, Vancouver Playhouse, Edinburgh Queen’s Hall, and Glasgow City Halls.
As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras such as the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, the Nürnberger Symphoniker, and the Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen, working with conductors including Maxim Emelyanychev, Jakob Lehmann, and Johannes Klumpp. Deeply engaged with chamber music and art song, Dmitry enjoys collaborations with artists such as violinist Alena Baeva, cellist Anastasia Kobekina, soprano Kateryna Kasper, the Eliot Quartett, and the Henschel Quartett.
His discography features acclaimed recordings, among them a double album of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations (Organum Classics), recorded on both a modern Fazioli concert grand and an 1825 fortepiano by Nannette Streicher, a close friend of Beethoven. The album was honored as Album of the Week by BR-Klassik. His previous recordings — chamber music by César Franck with the Eliot Quartett (Genuin) and songs by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn with soprano Kateryna Kasper (TYXArt) — were nominated for major music awards such as the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Opus Klassik, and the International Classical Music Awards.
In October 2023, the Chopin Institute in Warsaw released his latest album, featuring a selection of Chopin’s late works performed on a historical Pleyel fortepiano No. 14810, Chopin’s last instrument.
Born in Moscow, Dmitry began learning piano and composition at the age of five under Tamara Mezlumova and made his orchestral debut at nine, performing Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D major. He then perfected his skills under Kira Shashkina at the Central Music School before studying with Vladimir Tropp at the Gnessin Academy of Music. Later, he moved to Germany to study period instruments and historically informed performance with Jesper Bøje Christensen.
A prizewinner of numerous competitions, he gained widespread recognition following his success at the International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments in Warsaw in 2018 and the Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges in 2019. He subsequently won the 10th International German Piano Award in 2021.In October 2024, Dmitry was appointed Professor of Fortepiano at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
